Dr. Campbell sees recovery like a hiking expedition. Before embarking on that expedition it is vital to start the process of describing the summit we are aiming for. We want to know your values, your goals, and how your addiction is limiting the life you could be living; this gives us a compass and helps ensure we are going the right way. In addition to this compass, we want to take a look at what obstacles, terrain, weather and challenges that may come up. This takes into account your specific situation and connects it to the scientific literature applicable to people who have had similar challenges. In addition to the literature, Dr. Campbell’s personal experience aids in understanding what challenges tend to arise and the process of working through them. With the obstacles clarified, we can start to build a toolkit that will help you successfully manage the challenges you face. Lastly, Dr. Campbell walks with you to help you implement these new tools and adjust to the terrain you face along the way until you reach that summit. We acknowledges that summits may change, new summits may arise, new obstacles may arise, but the tools and the mapping process will ensure you are equipped to successfully navigate them all.
Much of the work on clarifying your compass are established from Motivational Interviewing as well as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. These are 2 high quality, evidence-based treatments studied to help people with addictions. These help get at the heart of the values, goals, and parts of life you care most about.
Some of the obstacles we see people face are the limited amount of time people have between an urge to use and using. We help them build space between those actions and understand the triggers and reinforcers that are keeping this behavior in place. Triggers can include some of the people, places and things that are frequently talked about as well as some of the internal emotional states. Reinforcements can be some of the positive aspects these behaviors bring about (or used to) as well as some of the negative things it helps people escape. This process is part of an underlying functional analysis that comes from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and helps guide our interventions.
This CBT guided toolkit includes the newer developments from Dialectical Behavioral Therapy as well as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. It brings in the Community Reinforcement Approach to utilize the environment, a powerful tool for your recovery, as well as evidence based groups and peer communities. Medication can also be a high impact tool that can address the addiction as well as some of the triggers that can be limiting the recovery.
